Let’s face it, there are a lot of different homeschool curriculums to choose from. You want to make sure that the curriculum that you choose will mesh with your homeschooling goals, your family life, and your child’s personality.

1. Do you value creative thinking over tons of drill and kill worksheets?   Home School Navigator is project-based learning at its best.  Much of the learning is based upon games and activities and projects are encouraged to show understanding. After watching the learning videos, children are invited to practice that learning with hands-on skill building activities. If you enjoy out-of-the-box thinking and activities, then this curriculum should work well for you.

2. Do you want to be more hands-on with your teaching and your child’s learning?
Home School Navigator is not for everyone.  This system works best for those who have the time to focus on their children individually.  Rich discussions of materials and projects are part of the curriculum. The writing and spelling portions of the program are also individualized, so the instructor needs to be able to have time to look at each child’s work and use how they did to inform their decisions about what to do and work on next.

3. You value independent thinking and learning that is tailored to each child’s individual needs.
Rubrics and mini-lesson guides are provided to the instructor so that the teacher can make the best decisions about where the child still needs extra practice in any particular skill.  Guidance is provided for how to support the child’s learning, and if the child shows mastery of a skill, there is even the option of moving on to the next task or color level.

 4. Your child likes to self-select the books that they read and like to self-select ways to respond to reading.
One major element of the curriculum is the self- selection of independent reading stories.  Children are encouraged to find and read books that interest them along with a guide to finding books that provide enough support for their reading levels. In levels yellow through indigo (approximate grades 2-5) do contain several book studies, in which certain books are read and children answer questions about those stories. Otherwise, children are encouraged to read books of their own choosing and are encouraged to read books from different genres.

Is Home School Navigator the right choice for your family?  If you value hands-on, creative learning that is tailored to your child’s individual skill level then this is the curriculum for you!
