The author Patricia Polacco (one of our all-time favorite storytellers!) was 41 years old before she wrote her first children’s book? Since then, she has written 115 stories and has won 60 awards for her work! All of this is impressive, but it is even more so considering that she did not learn how to read until she was 14 years old, when it was discovered that she had dyslexia. (This journey of self discovery is chronicled in her book, Thank You Mr. Faulker, which is guaranteed to make you feel all the feels!) Delving into her storytelling familial roots from Russia, Ukraine, and Ireland, she continues to weave stories that delight audiences of all ages.
Known for her talented writing and illustrating, she is also a fervent champion for children’s rights and is a noted speaker for speaking out for the underserved and the “different” while also speaking out against bullying. She is one amazing woman and as someone who has had the privilege to meet her and hear her speak, she holds a special place in our hearts and minds! You will find a whole month devoted to an author study of Patricia Polacco in month 2 of our Level Green curriculum.
